Proposed Education policy for Bangladesh: A New News

The Institute of Education and Research (IER) of Dhaka University (DU) has worked out a set of strategies to implement the proposed education policy.

IER Prof Siddiqur Rahman presented the strategies at a daylong national seminar on 'National Education Policy-2009: Strategies for Implementation', at the DU Senate Bhaban yesterday. The IER organised the seminar.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, Pro-VC Prof Harun-or-Rashid, TIB Trustee Prof Muzaffer Ahmad, Prof Mansur Musa, and Notre Dame College Principal Father Benjamin Costa, among others, took part in the open discussion at the seminar with IER Director Prof Salma Akhter moderating.

Prof Siddiqur Rahman asked the government to utilize the classrooms, furniture and teachers of the existing junior secondary and secondary schools and madrasas for the proposed primary education, to minimize financial cost.

He laid emphasis on promotion of all including teachers, officials and employees involved in the primary education to create competition of professional skills among them.

The IER professor, also an eminent education researcher, suggested establishment of a vocational institution in each upazila and a technical institution in each district under government initiative to properly execute the proposed education policy.

He said formation of a 'National Teacher Selection and Development Council' is a dire necessity to ensure recruitment of competent and skilled teachers at primary, secondary and college levels.

He asked the government in his strategy paper to ensure computer education and Internet service at all levels of education and launch a separate education-based television channel to make the education policy a right implementation.

Addressing the seminar as the chief guest, the UGC chairman said it would have been batter if the word 'secular' was not been mentioned in the proposed education policy, as the word had become somewhat disputed.

"We will show secularism with our behavior and activities, we don't need something written for this", the UGC chairman added.

The DU VC asked the government to make primary education as strong as possible so that a student can do himself after completing his primary education.

Prof Muzaffer Ahmad said recovery of the education sector from politicized management is very crucial to its success, adding that technical education should be added to the mainstream education.

Prof Mansur Musa said, "we should attach more importance on religious education, as it works best as the source of morality among students."

Father Benjamin Costa said practical education for science students should be imparted in a proper way and only committed people should be taken for education management.
